He’s a salesman and a father who’s never around. Gerry is disliked by Kate’s because he never sees his son . However whilst  being at the cottage he is kind and caring towards Christina. He refuses to have any opinion on the Spanish Civil War or the issues it highlights. He nevertheless joins the International Brigade to fight Franco in Spain, as he is bored with selling gramophones. 

Despite not being killed in the in Spain he is injured, not in action but by falling off a motorbike.

Gerry has a family that Christina knows nothing about. He is married, with two sons, one of whom contacts Michael after Gerry’s death, as he learns about the existence of his Irish half brother after his father’s passing.
