-The Sign of Four-

Johnathan Small

The culprit of the crimes investigated. A wronged man leading a hapless life, forced into his pursuits by revenge for the betrayal. He is seen to be something of an extremophile, surviving crocodile attacks and mutinies only to then find his way to London after escaping imprisonment.

His friendship with Tonga, born from his medical knowledge, is also of note, with racism running rife throughout. Though he may have cast the stone which rippled the lake, it is a debate whether he is truly responsible for all of the damage caused.

Quotes

“…It does seem a queer thing to me, that I who have a fair claim to half a million of money should spend the first half of my life building a breakwater in the Andamans, and am like to spend the other half digging drains at Dartmoor.

“It is my treasure; and if I can’t have the loot I’ll take darned good care that no one else does”

“there were two hundred thousand black devils let loose, and the country was a perfect hell.”
