Chanda’s mother is an intensely tragic character, plagued for constantly falling in love after the death of her husband, and plagued again to watch every hope she has fall. She tries her best to keep her family safe and leaves immediately after hearing about the abuse upon her daughter by Pheto, finding another lover in Dube, but only to find it taken away by a sudden death. Her battles are unceasing and eventually bring her down when she is diagnosed with AIDS, caught from one of her affairs. Chanda puts her at ease before she dies.
