


Act 1 Scene 5
Romeo, Benvolio, and their friend Mercutio arrive at the Capulet feast. The guests are greeted by Lord Capulet, who reminisces with his cousin about how long it has been since they both took part in a masque. Romeo cannot stop thinking about Rosaline until he sees Juliet and instantly falls deeply in love with her. Tybalt recognises Romeo’s voice and sends for his rapier to kill him. However, before Tybalt can create a scene, Lord Capulet reminds him of the prince’s prohibition of public fighting and orders the boy to stand down.
Romeo and Juliet continue their exchanges and they kiss, but are interrupted by The Nurse, who sends Juliet to find her mother. Romeo asks the Nurse who Juliet is and on discovering that she is a Capulet, begins to realise the grave consequences of their love. Juliet is heartbroken when she later asks the Nurse about Romeo, she is shocked is to find out that she has fallen in love a Montague. The feast draws to a close and Romeo leaves with Benvolio and the others.






Plot Summary
Romeo and Juliet is a multi-award winning play written by William Shakespeare. It is a tragic love story where the two main characters are from rival families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Therefore, Romeo and Juliet are supposed to be sworn enemies but fall deeply in love. Due to their families’ ongoing conflict and inability to solve their differences, they cannot be together. The tragedy results in both killing themselves because they cannot cope with being separated from one another.
